The complete guide to car insurance in Saudi Arabia

What third-party, third-party plus, and comprehensive actually cover, how premiums are calculated, Najm and Istimara requirements, and what to check before you pay.

The three levels of vehicle cover in the Kingdom

Every vehicle driven in Saudi Arabia must carry at least third-party liability insurance. This is the legal floor, and a valid policy is what allows you to renew your Istimara. Third-party cover pays for damage and injury you cause to other people and their property. It is the cheapest option precisely because it pays nothing at all towards repairing your own vehicle.

Comprehensive cover sits at the other end. It includes third-party liability by default and adds protection for your own car: accident repair regardless of who was at fault, fire, theft where you were not negligent, and natural events such as floods, hail, and storms. Many comprehensive policies also bundle driver personal-accident compensation and remove the deduction for spare-part depreciation.

Between the two sits third-party plus, sometimes called a custom or enhanced third-party product. It starts from the legal minimum and layers on specific extras chosen by the insurer, which is exactly why it needs reading carefully. Two policies both labelled third-party plus can behave very differently, so compare the actual benefit list rather than the product name.

How insurers decide what you pay

Premiums in Saudi Arabia are filed with and supervised by the Insurance Authority, but each insurer builds its own rating model within that framework. That is why the same driver, entering identical details on the same day, can receive quotes that differ substantially. The factors that move your price the most are:

  • Your claims and violations history. This is the single strongest lever, and it works in both directions.
  • Your age and how long you have held a licence. Younger and newer drivers are rated as higher risk.
  • The vehicle itself. Make, model, year, engine size, and the cost and availability of its spare parts.
  • Where the vehicle is kept. Traffic density and accident frequency vary widely between cities.
  • The cover level and deductible you choose. A higher deductible lowers your premium but raises what you pay out of pocket on a claim.

Because each insurer weighs these differently, there is no single cheapest company in the Kingdom. There is only the cheapest company for your profile, on the day you ask. This is the entire argument for comparing rather than renewing on autopilot.

Discounts you are already entitled to

The No-Claims Discount is the most valuable one, and it is the one drivers most often leave unclaimed. Each consecutive claim-free year increases the reduction applied to your premium, typically ranging from 10% to 50% based on how many claim-free years you have. It is calculated from official records, which means an accurate application is what unlocks it. On Ananas the check runs automatically, so you do not have to know to ask.

On Ananas, insurance companies present their available offers for comparison. You can review prices, essential coverage, free benefits, and optional extras side by side, then choose the offer that best fits your needs.

Health and professional cover, briefly

Vehicle insurance is not the only mandatory line. Employers in Saudi Arabia must provide health insurance for their employees and, depending on category, their eligible dependents, arranged through an approved insurer and meeting the regulator's minimum benefit levels. For a small or medium business the practical decisions are the hospital network tier, the annual limit, and how dependents are handled, because those three choices drive both the premium and how satisfied your team will be when they actually use the policy.

Medical malpractice insurance is a professional requirement for many licensed practitioners, including physicians across specialties, dentists, nurses, pharmacists, and a range of technicians. A professional liability policy responds to claims arising from unintentional error or negligence during practice, and typically covers legal defence costs alongside any compensation. Limits, exclusions, and whether cover is written on a claims-made basis all vary by insurer, so the benefit schedule matters more than the headline price.

What to check before you pay

Read the deductible, the spare-parts basis (agency or non-agency workshop), the geographical scope, and the list of named exclusions. Confirm whether the price shown includes VAT and any policy fee. Check that the vehicle and driver details pulled from official records are correct, because inaccurate or withheld material information can allow an insurer to reduce a claim or cancel the policy under the regulator's rules. Then compare at least three offers on benefits, not on price alone.

Important note

This guide is general information, not insurance advice. Coverage, limits, and exclusions are governed by the terms of the policy you buy and by the regulations of the Insurance Authority.
